Moreton-in-Marsh to Stratford-upon-Avon
Distance: 42 miles
For road-cycling enthusiasts seeking atmosphere and action, then taking a trip through the buzzing Cotswold villages of Moreton-in-Marsh and Chipping Campden before heading out towards the historic town of Stratford-upon-Avon is sure to provide plenty of entertainment. When you get to Stratford you’ll be spoilt for choice, from Cafes and ice-cream parlours, you’ll find plenty of places to rest your legs (and wheels!) before heading back towards Ilmington and the hilly village of Compton Scorpion.
Burkley to Gloucester
Distance: 28 miles
Considered an easy bike ride, this route is perfect for off-road cycling. The majority of the ride takes you along the flat, 16-mile Gloucester and Sharpness Canal until you reach the historic City of Gloucester. Here you’ll find lots to explore, including Gloucester Cathedral and a range of independent Cafes – perfect for a hot coffee and a hearty slab of cake!
Cirencester to Stroud
Distance: 31 miles
Located in the south of the Cotswolds, Cirencester is the region’s largest town and boasts a rich Roman heritage that’s still visible today. This mostly off-road cycling route begins in Cirencester and follows a section of the Thames Path — a 185-mile trail stretching from the Cotswolds to London. This path offers a chance to extend your ride if you think you can handle a few extra miles!
Along the way, you’ll navigate a few quiet country roads, passing through the town of Nailsworth, before picking up a second off-road trail that leads you to the vibrant market town of Stroud.
Cotswolds Line
Distance: 67.7 miles
Transporting you through the stunning Cotswold scenery, the Cotswold line is part of the National Cycle Route 442. Starting in the City of Worcester, you’ll head out towards Honeybourne, Chipping Campden, and Charlbury before ending up in Long Hanborough, just outside of Oxford. This is a long ride best suited for road cyclists, so an early start is essential — but the reward is well worth it. You’ll enjoy sweeping views of the Cotswolds’ rolling hills as you enjoy an adrenaline-fuelled ride through the valleys.
Bath Circular
Distance: 34 miles
If you’re looking to explore the south of England, then why not begin your Tour de Cotswolds in the popular regency city of Bath? From Bath, you’ll travel along the historic Avon canal towards the pretty town of Bradford-on-Avon and Laycock Abbey. As this route involves some hill climbing, there are plenty of pub stops on route – so rest assured you won’t be short of places to rehydrate! From thereon, you’ll travel back down the long Roman Road towards your start point in Bath.
Have you got your cycling essentials?
Ensure a smooth, hassle-free ride by packing all the essentials. Follow our checklist to stay fully prepared for your next cycling trip!
Lights and reflectors
If you’re riding on the road, make sure you’ve got a high-quality set of lights and reflectors to aid visibility. If you’ve already got these installed on your bike, check them over before heading out to make sure they’re in good working order.
GPS Tracker
Avoid getting lost out in the sticks by using a handy cycling GPS tracker. If you’re more of a traditionalist then make sure you’ve got your up-to-date map stored in an easy-to-reach spot with regular pit stops plotted out.
Bright clothing
Bright clothing is essential all year round, so make sure you’re wearing high-visibility cycling kit to stay safe and seen. If you’re carrying a backpack with you while you ride, then a bright backpack cover can improve visibility and protect your belongings from the elements.
Water
Avoid dehydration by packing multiple bottles of water and storing them in a clever bottle cage attached to your bike for easy access on the go.
Bike lock
Keep your bike secure while you’re taking a well-deserved coffee break by investing in a sturdy bike lock. Here at Halfords, we stock high-quality D-locks and cable locks to keep your kit safe and sound.
Puncture repair kit
Don’t let a flat tyre end your ride – pack a puncture repair kit and a reliable bike pump for quick roadside fixes and inflations.
