Wherever you’re heading on your Easter holidays this year, there are certain steps that you’ll probably want to take to make sure that your car is ready and waiting when it’s time for you to hop behind the wheel.

Here’s a quick countdown of five key areas that we’d recommend keeping an eye on ahead of your travels this Easter.

Oil

It can sometimes be a bit of a case of ‘out of sight, out of mind’ for our oil levels. But as engine oil lubricates the moving parts of the engine, it’s really important to stay on top of your oil levels or you could risk costly repairs further down the line.

The good news is that checking your oil is a quick and easy process, and one that anyone can do. Have a read of our article on How to check your engine oil for guidance if you’re not sure where to start.

If you do find your oil needs topping up, then we offer a wide selection of the best oils and you can enter your vehicle registration number to find the right match for your vehicle. Our engine oil buyer’s guide also has some great advice and top tips if you’re looking for more information.

Air conditioning

As the weather gets warmer, you want to be safe in the knowledge that your air conditioning will be there when you need it. That’s where staying on top of your AC maintenance comes in.

We can help here, thanks to our Free Air Con Check which is available at all Halfords stores. The check takes just 15 minutes and during that time we’ll assess the pressure of your AC, your gas quantity and your refrigerant levels.

If a top-up is required, you can either pick up what you need to recharge your AC yourself from within the store or take advantage of our air con recharge service.

Tyres

Tread depth, pressure and general condition are three key areas to watch out for when it comes to your tyres, particularly when you’re about to set off on a long journey.

The minimum legal tread depth for tyres is 1.6mm, so you’ll want to make sure that yours meet this level. While you may have heard that using the 20p trick is a good way of judging tread depth, we’d always recommend using a more precise measuring method like a tyre tread gauge as it’ll give you a more accurate reading.

A tyre pressure gauge will ensure that your tyres are inflated to the perfect level, making handling easier. Your vehicle’s handbook should include the optimum pressure settings for your particular vehicle.

In terms of general condition, be on the look out for any cuts, splits and nicks in your tyres, as well as any glass, nails or screws that might have become imbedded in the rubber and could cause a puncture in the future.

If you’d like a second opinion on your tyres, then why not book in for our Free Tyre Check? The service is available at any Halfords garage and our expert technicians will check all of the points listed above for you for free.

Screenwash

No one wants to have to contend with a messy windscreen and reduced visibility when they’re out on a long journey, so checking your screenwash level beforehand and making sure that it’s topped up is high on our list of recommendations.

You can choose between ready-to-use and concentrate, as well as various scents that will keep your windscreen clear and smelling fresh throughout your travels.

Windscreen

The condition of your windscreen is just as important as being able to keep it clear. Check for any chips or cracks before you head out this Easter as these could get worse over the course of a long journey.

Our Windscreen Chip Repair service is on-hand if you do come across any issues that need attention. You can book the service online and appointments are available both instore and via our Halfords Mobile Experts.
