Fuel theft usually occurs at night or at hours when there’s less traffic on the roads, and is becoming a more common occurrence, so it’s important you know how to stay protected.
In this article, we explain all the precautions you can take to protect your vehicle and avoid being a victim of fuel theft.
How do thieves take fuel?
There are a number of ways that thieves target vehicles:
- Siphoning – This involves removing fuel directly from the tank, typically by inserting a tube through the fuel filler pipe.
- Drilling – This method involves drilling a hole into the fuel tank to quickly drain the fuel.
Unfortunately, 4x4s, commercial vehicles such as vans, and SUVs are often more susceptible to fuel theft, as their large tanks and higher ground clearance make it easier for thieves to access the underside of the vehicle and drill into the fuel tank.
If you’re driving a diesel car, you may also be at a higher risk of fuel theft, so if you’re in the market for a new car, we recommend switching to an EV or petrol engine.
How can I avoid being a victim of fuel theft?
There are a number of ways you can avoid your fuel being stollen out of your vehicle, these include:
Use a locking fuel cap
Most modern cars have fuel flaps that lock with the central locking system, so that your fuel cap cannot be accessed, and others must be unlocked with the driver’s key; however, a lot of older cars don’t have any of these safety features, so they’re super easy to access for fuel thieves.
If you don’t already have a locking fuel cap, we recommend replacing it with one to stay protected.
Use security and surveillance
Another good option is taking surveillance and security measures on your driveway to keep your car safe overnight.
A few good options are below:
- Motion-activated lights – These illuminate your driveway when movement is detected, making it harder for thieves to go unnoticed. Another good option is laying a bit of gravel down where you park, as this will make lots of noise to alert you that someone is lurking around your vehicle.
- CCTV cameras – Visible cameras can act as a strong deterrent and provide recorded evidence if theft or suspicious activity occurs.
- Smart doorbell systems – These allow you to monitor your driveway in real time and receive alerts on your phone if movement is detected.
Practice defensive parking
Defensive parking is a great way to keep your vehicle safe from fuel siphoning, and it’s pretty simple to do.
To park defensively, do the following where possible:
- Park close to a wall – Position your car so the fuel cap is right up against a wall or fence. This makes it much harder for thieves to access the tank.
- Use other vehicles as a barrier – If you have more than one car on the driveway, park them side‑by‑side with both fuel caps facing inward. This removes the space thieves need to get between them.
- Choose secure, well‑lit car parks – When parking away from home, especially overnight, opt for monitored car parks with CCTV rather than quiet side streets or unmanned areas. A little extra cost can go a long way in protecting your vehicle.
General vehicle safety
This one might seem a bit obvious, but a bit of general housekeeping can go a long way. Always make sure you do the following every time you leave your vehicle unattended:
- Close soft‑top roofs, windows and sunroofs – tempting as it is in summer, leaving them open gives thieves easy access.
- Always lock your doors – it sounds obvious, but it’s essential. On most modern cars, locking the doors also secures the fuel cap.
- Park out of sight where possible – use a garage, carport or even a hedge line to keep your vehicle concealed and less of a target
Consider you commute
Leaving your car on a secure driveway can be safer than using public car parks or off-road parking. Consider whether you really need to drive, and explore alternative transport options such as:
- Bike – e-bikes and hybrid bikes are an excellent alternative
- Bus
- Walking
- Train / Tube
These alternatives can also help you save money in the long run.
While these tips cannot guarantee the prevention of fuel theft, they will certainly minimise your risk of being targeted, so it’s important to take them into consideration when you’re leaving your vehicle unattended.
