Whether you cycle for fun, fitness, or your daily commute, keeping your bike in top working condition is essential for safety and performance. A Free 25‑Point Bike Health Check at Halfords helps ensure your bike is safe to ride, properly set up, and ready for the road. Regular checks can also extend your bike’s lifespan and prevent small issues from turning into costly repairs.

Even if your bike was built by an expert, it’s still worth getting it checked after around six weeks of riding. This helps ensure everything continues to perform as intended and gives you the opportunity to raise any comfort or setup concerns that have become apparent since purchase.

Why get your bike checked?

If your bike wasn’t professionally built, there’s a chance it may not be set up correctly. Misaligned brakes, loose bolts, or poorly adjusted gears can all affect safety.

At Halfords, our experienced bike mechanics will carry out a comprehensive free bike check to:

  • Confirm your bike has been assembled correctly
  • Identify any safety concerns or developing issues
  • Give you confidence that your bike is reliable and safe to ride

And the best part? You don’t need to have bought your bike from Halfords. We’ll check any bike, no matter where or when it was purchased, because your safety on the road matters.

And if you recently purchased a bike, a check after six weeks can ensure everything is correctly set up for your riding style and that everything is as comfortable as possible.

What does the Free Bike Health Check involve?

Our Free Bike Health Check takes up to 30 minutes and covers 25 key points across your bike, including the following:

  • Frame, Saddle and Handlebars
  • Wheels; Tyres, Rims, Spokes and Hubs
  • Brake system; Levers, Calipers, Pads and Cables
  • Drivetrain; Gears, Levers, Chain, Bottom Bracket, Cranks and Cables
  • A visual check for all e-bike electrical components to highlight any physical damage that may affect performance

This will take the form of what we call an ‘M-check’, where our mechanic will work their way around your bike from top to bottom, assessing all 25 elements for signs of wear, damage or adjustment requirements.

If they spot any problems that require a service, they’ll get the bike booked in at the first available opportunity.

When should you make an appointment?

Where your new bike wasn’t professionally built, we’d suggest booking a Free Bike Health Check at your earliest convenience. This will help identify any assembly or safety issues before they become a problem.

If you’ve recently bought a bike from Halfords, we recommend booking a bike check after six weeks. As new bikes settle in after regular use, components such as gears, brakes and cables can require minor adjustments. This check allows one of our bike experts to ensure everything is working correctly, make any necessary tweaks, and confirm that your bike is comfortable and set up properly for you.

For kids’ bikes and adult bikes

The good news is that our Free Bike Health Check covers both kids’ bikes and adult bikes so everyone can stay safe on their cycling journeys. Our check covers all sizes and disciplines too.
