1. The West London Green Loop

  • Distance: 37km (23 miles)
  • Difficult: Easy

This relaxed, scenic loop is made for sunny days and steady cruising. Starting at the National Theatre, follow the Thames Path past Battersea Park and Wandsworth Common, then wind your way through the greenery of Wimbledon Common and Richmond Park. This ride is ideal for a mid-ride picnic or a bit of deer spotting.

The route continues north to the London Wetland Centre, where peaceful trails and wildlife views await, before heading across Hammersmith Bridge to explore Holland Park’s Kyoto Garden. You’ll finish with a breezy cruise through Hyde Park to the Serpentine.

With mostly paved paths and plenty of green space, it’s a brilliant ride for all abilities, and a great way to discover the best of west London on two wheels.

2. The Thames Path

The full trail is 298 km long, and at an average daily walking pace, you can complete it in 14 days. Following England’s best known river, this path leads you from the source of the River Thames in the Cotswolds into the centre of London.

However, most of the Thames Path is not open to cyclists as it is a public footpath. That said, many sections do allow cycling so you can enjoy this scenic long-distance route.

Teddington to Putney

  • Distance: 19km
  • Difficulty: Medium

Complete this well-loved section of National Cycle Route 4, with a mix of city views, relaxing parks, and atmospheric historic sights as you cycle past Teddington Lock, Richmond Park, and the London Wetland Centre.

Reading to Windsor

  • Distance: 50km
  • Difficulty: Hard

The endurance required for this longer distance route is worth it for the lovely and diverse scenes you’ll catch along your way. Pass through Sonning, Maidenhead, Cookham, and Eton, before completing your tour in Windsor.

3. The Wandle Trail

  • Distance: 20km
  • Difficulty: Easy

This flat, mostly traffic-free route follows the River Wandle from Wandsworth to Croydon, making it perfect for all ability levels. With leafy paths, park pit stops and riverside views, it’s ideal for family rides, relaxed solo spins, or even a cycling date.

Pick up National Cycle Route 20 from Wandsworth Town Station and enjoy a calm, meandering cruise south. Add a pannier rack or basket to store all your accessories, snacks, water, and picnic essentials.

4. Epping Cycle Loop

  • Distance: 20.4km
  • Difficulty: Medium

This wild and scenic cycle route is a great long ride near London that lets you explore the edges of Epping Forest. Some sights to keep an eye out for include:

  • Wellington Hill.
  • Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge.
  • Strawberry Hill.

There’s plenty of variety in trails and the wildlife you can spot, as well as calm pools and deep forest paths. Although, this route can get muddy during winter, so don’t forget your mudguards if you’re planning to tackle it!

5. Hampstead to Tower Bridge

This 30km route shows off some of London’s best scenery in one smooth sweep. Start near Hampstead Heath, cruise through Regent’s Park, Hyde Park, Green Park and St James’, then cross Westminster Bridge and follow the quieter roads behind the South Bank to Tower Bridge. From there, Cycle Superhighway 6 offers a peaceful return leg with minimal traffic. It’s ideal for intermediate riders wanting a mix of parkland and city landmarks.

6. The River Lea

  • Distance: 32km

This stunning, flat river ride will take you past willow trees, grazing horses and cattle, and quaint narrowboats making their way along the water. The perfect relaxed gravel bike ride, this route is super easy to navigate and is almost completely traffic-free!
