How to prepare your bike for a cycling event
Although you’ve done the training, you’re not fully prepared for your sportive until your bike is event-ready. Proper bike maintenance is vital for safety, comfort, and performance. Check out our simple pre-event checklist:
1. Check your bike tyres
- Inspect for cuts, cracks, or embedded debris.
- Inflate to the recommended PSI, often printed on the tyre sidewall.
- Ensure your tread is suitable for the event terrain.
2. Inspect your brakes
Vital for precision-stopping and safety, especially when cycling alongside others, your brakes need to be well-maintained.
- Check brake pads for wear.
- Ensure cables or hydraulic lines are functioning smoothly.
- Test stopping power before and on event day.
3. Lubricate your chain
You should clean your bike and remove any old dirt or grime, and once dry, apply a suitable bike lube depending on the expected weather conditions.
Remember to wipe off the excess to avoid attracting more dust!
4. Check gears and shifting
It’s important that you ensure there’s smooth shifting across all the gears, and adjust the derailleur alignment if needed.
Listen out for clicking or grinding sounds, and if you do notice any, bring your bike into your local Halfords store for a free bike check, and we’ll check out the issue.
5. Test ride before the event
Of course, for the long-distance rides, we’d expect that you’d spent plenty of time practising before hand. But regardless of your training or race length, take your bike for a short test ride before the actual event to ensure everything feels right.
Here, you can make final adjustments to your saddle height or handlebar position, and pack the final cycling essentials.
